Before we proceed to have a look at the various techniques in Pranyama or "Breath Control" { that is a very crude translation} lets us discuss what one can get out of this and the various preparations before one can start pranayama.
Let me tell the key benefits one can get and that is practical for an average person ( I mean someone practicing anywhere between 30 - 60 minutes a day). The most noticeable benefits I can see is a calming of the mind, a controlled speech, reduction in anger and a healthy glow in the skin. These are the behavioural and outward benefits one usually gets within a month or two of practice.
The more important health benefits include cleaning of the "nadis" , better usage of lungs and respiratory system, purification of the blood and a whole host of benefits to the nervous system
The preparation for pranayama should include yama, niyama and some asana practice including the ability to sit in a spine erect posture for some time.
I will elaborate on these preparations in my next post.
